Toncam’s expansion into their new showroom in Kingussie means they now have everything for the home covered - and not just the flooring which was the company’s starting point.

The business has become well-known and respected in Badenoch since being established in 1996.

But even Toncam Flooring and Interiors’ most loyal customers might be surprised to learn just how wide-ranging their services are these days.

And the great thing is that these are all available under one-roof since the firm’s major investment in their very own impressive 7,500 square feet showroom - complete with The Railway Cafe - on Ruthven Road by the town’s railway station.

The expansion included the Railway Cafe which has been earning rave reviews since opening.

Ten months on since the grand opening and Toncam’s bosses are delighted with how the expansion has worked out - with a lot more floor space to showcase their vast range of floorings, sofas, beds and home accessories.

Director Evan Menzies said: “Our biggest challenge is that having been established for so long and developing so much over these years that different pockets of customers think we do different things.

“We will have customers who we did carpet cleaning for 20 years ago who believe that is all we do.

“We also have customers who come into our new showroom and do not know that we do carpet cleaning.

“And we will have customers who have had carpet cleaning done by us in the past and come into the showroom and think we are too good for that now.

“But we do it all. Toncam has evolved and we are specialists these days in every aspect of the business.”

The company has come a very long way since the four directors came on-board.

Toncam had been a Kingussie-based sole-trading carpet cleaning business started by Glen Tonkin’s father Ian.

Following the sad passing of Ian, his legacy lives on as Glen took the bold decision to join forces with Scott Campbell and then later Evan and Rory Kennedy to really drive the business to where it is today.

This growth meant Toncam had outgrown its High Street premises and the directors were keen to have a showcase home to match the company’s reputation for quality.

It also means that they can show off their large range of sofas and beds which is now a key area of business.

“Moving into these premises last June allowed us to really commit to showcasing sofas and beds,” said Evan.

“Customers in the market for these products really need to be able to try before they buy so this was another big factor in the move.”

Toncam started out as a flooring specialist and it remains a key part of the business with a huge range of coverings on offer.

Toncam has forged some great industry relationships - they are Scotland’s only supplier for leading brand Sealy’s top of the range mattress ‘The Exquisite Indulgence Plush’ and the biggest showroom in the UK for luxury wood flooring specialists Ted Todd.

The firm works directly with an extensive range of manufacturers meaning they are able to cater for every budget and order - no matter how big or small - including from big businesses.

Showroom manager Sarah Musgrove arrived last summer as part of the company's expansion.

She said: “There are no hidden charges in our showroom and we are very much customer-focused.

“We point the customer into the direction of what they want and not what we want to sell them.”

Sarah said: “People can come in, choose their flooring, curtains, sofas and beds.

“They can pull everything together in one place and for example check the curtain fabric next to the headboard fabrics.

“There are not many places where you can do the whole lot in one place.”

A new desintation for Kingussie

A key part of the expansion plan was to turn Toncam Flooring and Interiors’ into a destination for those wishing to improve their homes.

Evan said: “Railway Cafe is very much about giving people a reason to come here and it has gained an excellent reputation already and this is all down to the hard work and dedication of Leonie Kennedy and the girls.

“It is a lovely place for people to come and have a look around; to have a piece of home-baking, all made on site in our kitchen, or a bacon roll and a speciality coffee.

“We have really tried to make this a place where people enjoy coming to and from all the feedback we have received I think that is definitely the case.”
