Police remind cyclists in Badenoch and Strathspey to light up whilst on roads in dark

Police officers in Badenoch and Strathspey area are urging all road users – cyclists, pedestrians and motorists – to be aware and keep safe following the change in daylight hours and as the weather becomes more unpredictable.

Cyclists can be vulnerable in rural areas in particular where there is less street lighting and the aim is to encourage them to think how they can be as visible as possible.

From a cycling perspective, the law states that when on a bicycle between sunset and sunrise, it must be fitted with the following:

• white front light;

• red rear light;

• red rear reflector; and

• pedal reflectors.

Temporary Inspector Craig Johnstone said: “Keeping people safe on our roads is a priority for us throughout the year but as the days become shorter we want to encourage everyone to stay safe and encourage visibility as part of that.

“We are encouraging cyclists to think about how visible they are to other road users, particularly in rural areas where there can be a lack of street lighting.

“As well as complying with the law in relation to lights, cyclists should also wear bright clothing.

"If you are wearing black or dark colours then you are not visible to other road users.

“Unfortunately, when a collision happens, it is often cyclists that come off worse so being easily visible to others is vital.

“We urge all road users to look out for each other and help make our roads safer for all.”
