At the heart of democracy is the power that lies in the hands of the people: their ability to use their voices, and the government’s duty to heed those voices.

As the local MSP for Strathspey, I am well aware of the honour I’m entrusted with, in serving as the conduit through which the hopes and concerns of all my constituents flow.

So it will be no surprise to many of you that I wanted to talk again on the vital matter that has captured the attention and determination of our communities: the A9 dualling campaign.

The Scottish Parliament Public Petitions Committee is currently in the process of carefully considering the petition launched by dedicated campaigner Laura Hansler on the A9 dualling project.

This petition encompasses a comprehensive vision for our region, seeking to improve road safety, foster economic growth and establish a national memorial that honours those who have lost their lives on the road.

The monumental task of crafting a strategy that harmonizes these goals has given rise to a consultation document that invites the public to contribute their perspective.

Over the last year I have been working closely with Laura Hansler on this matter, as well as with countless other individuals who have a stake in the future of our roadways.

The strength of feeling that emanates from communities across the Highlands cannot be understated.

It is the collective power of these voices that fuels my determination to keep speaking out, as I have already done, until the A9 dualling is complete.

In recent months, the influx of letters and emails on this subject has been unparalleled, eclipsing all other topics that have come across my desk.

The strength of feeling and anger felt by our communities underscores the importance of this topic to you.

I want to assure each and every one of you that I hear you, and I share your conviction.

The aspirations of our communities for safer roads, improved access, and a thriving local economy are deserving of our utmost attention.

As we progress, it is not enough to rest on our laurels or simply pay lip service to these ambitions. Our commitment must be unwavering, and our actions must be decisive.

I stand firm in my resolve to continue advocacy for the dualling of the A9. The Scottish Government must set out a clear and comprehensive timetable that outlines each section scheduled for dualling and establish a new completion date for the project. It is through these tangible steps that we can transform our vision into a reality that benefits us all.

My call to action extends beyond the Parliamentary chamber. I would encourage and of you to engage with the consultation document that has been put forth. Your insights are invaluable, your perspectives unique and your voices essential.

The A9 dualling campaign is not just about infrastructure; it is about the promise of progress and the bond between government and communities.

For me this issue is a matter of honour and principle to the people I have served over the last 24 years. You can find details of the consultation on the public petitions committee website or click here or please do feel free to get in touch with my office and I will be happy to pass forward details of how you can take part to you directly.

Fergus Ewing (SNP) is MSP for Strathspey.
