Ceremony to be held to mark accession of new Clan Grant chief
There will be a ceremony at the Abernethy Games to mark the accession of the new chief of one of the most famous clans of them all.
Michael Grant of Grant Bt, Lord Strathspey, will officially become the 34th Chief of Grant at the gathering at Nethy Bridge on August 10.
He takes over from the late Sir James Grant of Grant who passed away in June, last year, after a short illness.
The popular annual Clan Grant gathering starts the day before with an AGM before the march and socialising at the games.
The day will be rounded off by the clan dinner and ceildih which is taking place at the Royal British Legion in Grantown.
Lord Strathspey is also the Abernethy Games Chieftain this year.
As part of his duties, he will formally open the games at 1pm following which the clan ceremony will take place in the main arena.
A Clan Grant spokesman said: “All Grants and those living in Strathspey are invited to come and join the parade, visit the clan tent which will also host the Grantown Museum, and meet Grants from all over the UK, and indeed from other parts of the world.
“The march starts from the Nethy Bridge Hotel, and those wishing to march should be there by 12.45pm.”
Normal games admission charges apply and tickets should be bought before the march into the arena.
The funeral of the 33rd Chief of Clan Grant took place the heartlands at Abernethy Old Kirk on the outskirts of Nethy Bridge.
Donald Patrick Trevor Grant of Grant died at home on May 26, last year.
He was a regular attendee at the Abernethy Highland Games and described as a ‘wonderful character’ who would be sorely missed.
In a message to clan members at the end of 2022, the then Lord Strathspey stated: "My goodness it was wonderful to be back in August, marching with the Clan behind the massed pipes and drums.
"I didn’t realise how much I had missed our gathering (due to the Covid pandemic).”
