Reel deal from Californian ska punks
Californian ska punks Reel Big Fish.
WHEN Dan Regan joined Californian band Reel Big Fish, they’d already been going two years and the label “ska punk” was a new concept few people had even put a name to yet.
But nearly 20 years on, Reel Big Fish survives and thrives, and is currently on a tour that takes in everywhere from Prague and Russia to Inverness – another first for the band.
But from the Californian heat to a cold Europe, is a bit of a shock to the system.
“We’re wrapped up like babushkas,” Dan laughed, before talking about the band’s start in 1992.
“In early 90s California, ska punk was the sound the local bands were playing,” said Dan. “We didn’t really know what ska was, but we heard a band from San Jose called Skankin’ Pickle and we just went ‘That’s the music for us!’. And then we were one of the local bands like No Doubt and Fishbone that we aspired to get shows with! The scene was pretty big and we’d be playing to a couple of thousand twice a week.”
But Dan also revealed that over the years, the different band members have brought their own musical flavours to the sound.
“We’ve had so many different guys in the band over the years that each brings and leaves a little bit of themselves. Over the years we have done our homework and found out about Jamaican ska – when calypso and boogie got together – but punk ska is what our stamp is. We bring whatever else we can throw into it.
“I put in a lot of hair metal,” laughed Dan. “And we are pretty silly. We’re not very political and I suppose we’re quite a goofy band.”
Alongside their own hits, such as first big one Sell Out, there are the crazy covers, everything from A-ha’s Take On Me to Metallica’s Enter Sandman.
So for anyone who hasn’t come across the full-on, slightly tongue-in-cheek ditties of Reel Big Fish, how would Dan sum it up.
“Candy coated fury,” he said. “We’ve been working on that one for a while!”
So, are you hooked yet?
