JOHN C Reilly plays a man going through a midlife crisis – and so is this movie.
It’s not funny enough to be a comedy and attempts to be serious don’t work either. It all falls a bit flat somewhere in between.
Which is a pity because the movie’s opening shows a lot of promise as drunken Reilly pulls himself together from the depression of his broken marriage when he meets sexy mom Molly (Marisa Tomei) at a party. Love is in the air until Molly’s large and strange 20-something live-at-home son (Jonah Hill) decides there isn’t room for two men in her affections and sets out to break up the blossoming affair.
The result is a quirky and gentle battle of wills, but the laughs are few and far between. PB
