A Kingussie driver has been fined for speeding at 110mph on the A95 whisky road by Skye of Curr.

Inverness Sheriff Court was told roofer Liam Macaulay, (22), of Cameron Terrace, High Street was clocked by traffic cops overtaking at 110mph in a 60mph limit on a straight stretch of road on June 4, last year.

Depute fiscal Stewart Maciver said the offence took place at 8pm and Macaulay was overtaking a BMW in his Ford Focus.

Solicitor Nigel Beaumont said Macaulay had lived in the area all his life and knew the road very well.

He said he was behind the BMW which had been going slowly but accelerated when they got on a straight and Macaulay committed himself to the overtaking manoeuvre.

"It was a momentary burst of speed. It lasted no more than two seconds."

Mr Beaumont said Macaulay had a clean licence since he was 17 and it was important to him for his work as a roofer.

Sheriff Margaret Neilson today fined him £270 and endorsed his licence with five penalty points.
