Groovy time guaranteed in Grantown at Austin Powers themed fundraiser
GROOVY baby! It certainly promises to be just that when the Sixties’ most flamboyant British secret agent Austin Powers helps rake in the funds for Grantown Primary School this weekend.
The International Man Of Mystery and his colourful friends will be the theme for this year’s major fundraiser by parents and supporters with the aim of bringing in $1 million – that’s in fake casino money not the real thing – to help refurbish and stock the school’s library.
It follows on from a gamble by the Friends of Grantown Primary School which paid off handsomely last Spring when their James Bond-themed casino evening raised nearly £1000 as it was attended by so many people dressed to kill.
This time round proceedings will be more funky with guests being encouraged to get into costume as Powers, Dr Evil, Foxxy Cleopatra, Mini-Me and the rest of the cast from the three hit movies starring Mike Myers as the main man.
One of those getting into the swing of things is Lucy Bostock, who said: “Last year’s Bond-themed Casino evening was such a success and such fun that we couldn’t resist organising another one. Austin Powers was the obvious next step, and it allows people to fancy dress or dress fancy – there’s just so much scope.
“This year we have four very generous sponsors for the casino tables thanks to The Speyside Centre, MacKenzie Kerr Limited, A.W. Laing Ltd, and Ashers.
“We will have two full size roulette tables, black jack and poker tables all professionally run, with tuition for the uninitiated.
“So we hope that plenty of people will find their mojo, grab their chest wig or find their inner fembot and come along on the night. It’s all for a good cause in helping us raise “One Million Dollars” in the words of Dr Evil.”
There will be a 1960s and 70s disco following the casino allowing revellers to get down and groove until 1am on Saturday (April 23).
Fellow organiser Bernie Swan said: “The idea to refurbish the library came out of a friends of meeting and comments from parents about the sadly lacking school library.”
Tickets are priced £15 and include a glass of bubbly on arrival, canapes and $5 to get started at the tables. There will be roulette raffles throughout the evening and great prizes including a night at Muckrach Hotel at Dulanin Bridge; dinner, B&B at the Auld Alliance in Kingussie; a leisure/cinema pass at Macdonald Aviemore Resort; fourball at Grantown Golf course and zipwiring at Alvie.
n Tickets are now on sale at Grantown British Legion, Elephants in the Pantry, The Bookmark, Scottish Hydro shop and from http://grantowncasino.eventbrite.co.uk
