Cairngorms trek to save sausage dogs from meat trade
Dachshund-rescuers who went the extra mile in the Cairngorms this month have roared past their funding target.
DMT Dachshund Rescue & Support Group went walkies in order to find the fares for no fewer than nine Chinese rescues to their forever homes in the UK, and raised over £4,000, sailing past their £3,000 target.
Group spokeswoman Julie Grant said: "To date we have rescued 135 dachshunds and dachshund crosses from the meat trade, breeding facilities and kill shelters in China, Korea and Vietnam.
"We also work proactively with other rescue organisations and support them to rescue other breeds.
In late summer 2023, we are hoping to fly the nine dogs from China. These are seven puppies – Brae, Colin, Dougie, Eric, Forest, Gigi and Huey, their mum Adele and little Tilly who was someone’s pet abandoned because she got ill.
"We didn’t think the puppies or Tilly would survive but fast forward a few months and we have nine healthy dogs who will soon be looking for their forever homes.
"The flights will come at a significant cost for the charity and we took to our mammoth sponsored walk in two locations, one in Aviemore and the other in Sunderland."
From the car park on the mountain they walked10 miles down into town, finishing at The Old Bridge in for light snacks and drinks.
