ScotRail services south of Inverness have been halted due to a broken down train at Dalwhinnie.

A broken down train is causing major disruption this morning for rail passengers between Inverness and the central belt.

ScotRail and LNER services between Edinburgh and Inverness and Glasgow and Inverness face cancellation with the operator already announcing that the 08:41 Inverness to Glasgow Queen Street train won’t run.

The train developed a fault at Dalwhinnie station, with the incident reported at 08:19. Disruption expected until 10:30 am at least.

Rail replacement transport is not yet in place, with a ScotRail spokeswoman saying: “We've got a broken down train at Dalwhinnie and unfortunately it's causing disruption to services through this area.

“Technicians are currently fault finding with the driver to see if we can get it on the move.

“Unfortunately we are having some trouble sourcing replacement buses. We’re still trying but until we've managed to get some in place, we would recommend you make your own arrangements.”

Customers are being advised to use station help points or to speak to a member of staff for further information.

ScotRail has a ticket acceptance agreement in place with Scottish Citylink buses between Inverness and Perth.

Passengers should show their valid ticket or Smart card to the driver when boarding the bus.
