PICTURES: Badenoch clubs’ great seasons rewarded at annual shinty awards

A highly successful year on the pitch for the Badenoch shinty clubs was reflected at the 2024 Mowi Awards at the weekend.

A second Grand Slam winning season in three years was recognised with Iain Borthwick being named national coach of the year at the ceremony in Fort William on Saturday.

The Red and Blues made it a clean sweep of managerial awards as the north area leagues coach of the year accolade went to their second team co-managers John Gibson and Russell Jones who led the side to a Mowi North Division 2 and HIS Sutherland Cup double.

The U17 player of the year was Joe Coyle who is now a key player in Newtonmore's first team.

Newtonmore claimed a unique youth double as brothers Joe Coyle and James Coyle were both recognised.

James Coyle was national under-14 player of the year whilst Joe Coyle was the national under-17 player of the year.

There was double delight for Badenoch B after their fourth-place finish in Mowi North Division 2 following a season during which they were also Mowi Challenge Cup runners-up.

Coach Rona Stewart was named Women’s Camanachd Association Division 2 coach of the year whilst the North Division 2 player of the year went to ace goal scorer Lexi Farquhar.

The William Paterson Salver for volunteer of the year went to the much-respected Rob Ritchie BEM for his tireless work over the last year for Newtonmore Camanachd and shinty in general.
