The Met Office’s yellow weather warning for snow and ice remains in place this morning with the Highlands in the grip of winter even before Storm Bert.

“A chance of disruption and difficult travel conditions due to snow and ice,” warns the service.

“Currently on Saturday the warning changes to amber for snow and ice as Storm Bert is expected to bring a spell of heavy snow, leading to some disruption.”

But after yesterday’s unscheduled ‘day off’ schools in Badenoch and Strathspey have returned to their studies this morning as conditions on the road improve for transport services.

Conditions in the strath as recorded at 6.44am by Highland Council’s roads team:

“Icy conditions throughout the area this morning with some fresh snow overnight. All routes being treated. No known overnight issues.”

Inverness area: “Icy conditions this morning, treating all routes and footpaths as resources allow. No known issues.”

Nairn area roads: “Icy conditions throughout the area this morning with some fresh snow overnight on higher routes. All routes being treated. No known overnight issues.”
