After years locked away behind scaffolding, the imposing Georgian big hoose at Balavil Estate has been 'freed' at last and can smile again at the sun.

Initial rumours were that the Heeremas must have sold up in Badenoch and gone, but general manager Gary Culpan told the Strathy today that was far from the case

BALAVIL HOUSE: Years of scaffolding have been removed at last.
BALAVIL HOUSE: Years of scaffolding have been removed at last.

He said: "Removal of the scaffolding is just a natural phase of the restoration work, which is proceeding as people can now see.

“It was only up so long because of Covid. We had two long periods of no action during the lock-in, it was just unfortunate timing. No soon had the scaffolding gone up four years ago when Covid struck the world.

"But the work on the house goes on. Erich and Hannah still have the estate and would love to be up here again but they have had to admit they just don't have the time to be here as well as at their other estate down in England and with the business, Nyetimber (the sparkling English wine company) beng so busy they have to be down there so much of the time.”

The 'scoop' for the Strathy, though, is that the estate - which is still very much on the market - is to be featured in the next edition of The Field Magazine, generally regarded as “the best place to read about country and field sports and country lifestyle: hunting, fishing, shooting, game recipes, gun dog training & more.”

As yet the agents have not quoted an asking price for the estate, which went on the market in November last year.
